Looking back my first recollections of meeting John was soon after taking up a CWT post at Weyhill in 1983. My responsibility at that time was to look at all aspects of maintainability and reliability of Police/Fire Control Room Communications Systems and Fire Brigade Mobilising Systems and ensuring Field Services were suitably equipped to maintain them post installation.
As Head of Static Systems 1 (SS1), John had an engineering and development responsibility for the introduction of new Communication systems, which the Directorate procured on behalf of Police and Fire Services. On a number of occasions during my many visits to Horseferry House to liaise with members of his team or attend customer meetings, I recall enjoying brief chats with John and found him to be very helpful.
From memory, following John's retirement in 1985, I believe John Mumford took over his role and continued to Head SS1 until Headquarters was relocated to Ruddington in September 1992.
I'm sure there will be others who have stronger memories of John, particuarly those based at Horseferry House during the late 70s-Early 80s. In particular members of John's team in the 80s including Les Whiteside, John Leake, Chris Barron, Colin Poyton and Lawrie Atkinson. Hopefully, there will be more comments to follow.
