RETIRED DTELS TECHNICIAN HITS THE HEADLINES AT 77

Post by Steven Cole »

From Peter Pinel dated 23rd February 2005
Peter has sent DTELS.Org a cutting from a local South Wales newspaper that carried an article concerning Selwyn James and his wife Ethel who had been threatened in their home sometime ago by an intruder carrying an imitation gun.

Speaking after the court case it transpired that Selwyn had answered the front door and was faced with the man holding a gun. Selwyn, an ex-soldier, wrestled with the man in his front room and kitchen before the intruder offered him money to let him go. During the struggle, Selwyn suffered bruising which subsequently required seven stitches and Ethel had been knocked to the ground whilst helping to fend off the robber. In passing sentence on the robber, the judge praised Selwyn and Ethel for their courage and expressed his admiration before awarding them ?250 each.

SHORT BACKROUND FROM PETER PINEL
Selwyn James retired at the age of 65 from Bridgend Depot in 1986. He spent his last years mastering the new WARC mobiles and passed on his considerable knowledge to his fellow Technicians.

This article shows much of the character of Selwyn who was one of the mainstays of the Bridgend Depot team. A little man with a huge heart. At his retirement party he recounted an incident where he was working alone on an equipment rack housed in the cells of a Police station when a prisoner escaped! Selwyn chased the man around the cell area until the man, who was six foot tall, turned around and it was Selwyn?s turn to run!
