Hi Folks,

My name is Geoff Barber and worked at the Cheveley depot near Newmarket for a number of years in the 70's and would like to get in touch with Derrick Coombes and John Jarvis again, please. I lost touch when I was promoted to SWT and moved the Kippax Depot in West Yorkshire. I retired at 60 from West Yorkshire Police and now live in a sleepy North Yorkshire village near Scarborough.

Hello Bob,

I was made redundant in Dec 1992 whilst at Weyhill. I went on to work with Vodafone firstly as a Senior Tec and the finally Principal Quality Engineer / Quality Controller mainly on business related areas. Though I had technical input on the quality of the work carried out by contractors and the up date of the MPT installation code of practise. I left there in 2002 and went to work for the MoD going down to part time in 2008. I have just finally retired.

Hope you and family are well.

Regards
Dave

Hi Bob,

Good to hear from another ex Hannington Team member. I'm sure you came over to Guildford on a few occasions. I worked Ian Doig when part of the Radio Investigation Service which we both joined in 1985 when their mass recruitment campaign was run - much to DTels consternation as a fair few WTs 'went over'. I went over with Vic Sowerbutts and ended up in Guildford. I think Ian ended up with the Reading Unit.

Dave Pack went off to Australia in the early 80's and I don't know of anyone who has heard from him recently. He ran Guildford and was my boss from 1980 to 1985. Be nice to know if he was still about - must be in his late 70's now?

Ian went off to ETSI as you know, and I was made redundant from RA in 2004 as part of the Ofcom 'cull', whilst an STTO looking after Baldock Monitoring Station. These days I look after a team of 34 project managers with HP - not much involvement with radio these days sadly.

And Graham K - if you're reading this too, Michael ended up in Oz as the Commissioner for the Emergency Services in Melbourne.

And another Ex RH'er signs in, or should I quote M2RH

I found this site the other day and had to sign up, although a little behind the times by the look of your postings.

Just like to say hi to:
Dave Rumens, Graham Dean, Graham Keens, Kevin Carrig, Roy Young, Dave Pack and sorry if I have missed anyone out.

I have just worked out that it will be 22 years this coming August, when we were made redundant from Hannington, where has the time gone. Anyway, have been employed in the world of aviation since 1991, initially, with NATS and now with the Civil Aviation Authority Safety Regulation Group as an ATS Engineering Investigatorat Gatwick Airport and living in Henfield,West Sussex since 1996, about 7 mile North of Truleigh Hill, I'm sure Dave will remember that site.

I am in touch with Ian Doig, through the websites of "Linked In" and "Facebook", yes even us oldies can use these networking sites, I note Ian has also signed up to DTELS, hopefully you will hear from him soon.

Anyway, just thought I would get in touch, it will be good to hear from you all.

He is indeed. Younger of course, but no wiser. :D

I have to admit that there have been times recently when I wish I was back at Guildford working on Dog Vans and MkII Escorts!

Might have gone for something like te NPIA if they'd kept Wyboston open as it's just up the road. I used to work with Annette Henley too when she was RA. Perhaps it will all go full circle when Ofcom closes down too.

Happy days eh!

Sorry to hear about the injury.
Yes, I'm still with the NPIA but as you say, not sure how long for. So Michael is you brother eh?
I understand Steve M. is still around as he went to one of the re-union do's in London a couple of years ago.
I have been working in Weymouth recently so called in to see Steve Millin (ex Hannington & London) as I hadn't seen him for quite a few years.

Sorry for the very long delay in replying. I have had a pretty rough couple of years after a serious spinal injury, but
I'm up and going again. Still working for HP but as a line manager now with a team of 32 Project & Programe Managers delivering to a major insurance company. I've also had spells running teams on the MOJ and MoD.

As far as I can recall, Vic retired from the RIS in the late 90's. He used to look after the western side of Surrey as it was nearest his home. Doigy was indeed still playing with ETSI last I heard.

Are you still with the NPIA? Given it's running down now, what's next? My brother was there as a Chief Super but has, or is just about to move over to whatever the new org is going to be called.

I did have contact recently from Steve M, also of Guildford Detachment. He went off to Harrow to play with the newly developing toys as they were 20 years ago.

Hello Mr H.
Any idea what happened to Vic Sowerbutts? I know he went RIS-ing in Reading but have not heard anything about him since.

Hi All,

Just discovered about the site so I thought I'd join in. Having left Guildford in 1985 to join the Radio Investigation Service I had many happy years in the field chasing various types of interference and miscreants before a stint in what became the Radiocommunications Agency's HQ in London Docklands (the IRA Bomb blew us out of there!!) followed by a stint at the Agency's laboratories at Whyteleafe.

In 1999 I was promoted to RS5 (what was STTO elsewhere) to become the Infrastructure Manager and Deputy Station Manager for Baldock Radio Monitoring Station in Hertfordshire.

The creation of Ofcom saw 115 of us made compulsorily redundant and I now spend my time working as a Project Manager, specialising in Risk Management, for EDS - or EDS an HP Company as we became on 1st August 2009.

I have often wondered what happened to some of the old crew at Guildford and Hannington.

Hi Roy

Post by peelb »

Not been on the forum for awhile although I regulary access the DTELS site and was surprised to see you here.

I survived DTELS and stayed in training with NTL till retirement in 2003. Got fed up after 5 years and now work two days a week at Bridgwater college teaching BTEC telecomms to students from UAE. This all comes to an end in July so probably go back to a life of leisure again.

Neil Thomas still with Aqiva and I saw Dave Waspe two weeks ago when I took my students to see the satellite section at Crawley Court.

Hope you are managing to survive the heat I have some friends who I keep in touch with on Facebook and they have really been suffering.

Regards

Hi Roy

Sorry for the delay but I never seem to get that much time nowadays - the result of retiring!

Victoria is having a real bad time at the moment with the bush fires. I feel for them. I note it's the adjacent State to South Australia so is it having any effect on you? Are you providing any emergency comms to help out?

Is the workshop for working aluminium at your home or place of employment? You are certainly keeping busy with all your interests.

Will have to keep this short n sweet so ttfn and keep cool!

Cheers

Graham.

Hi,
Sorry about the delayed replies!

We are in a record heatwave of over 40 C for five days!
And the hottest night on record. It reached 43.5 C last Friday.

This is extreme, to say the least, normally we have the high 30's in summer our lowest is around 0 C very few negatives, no Ice.

In this weather it's very hard to get to the workshop. I have a small lathe and a milling machine (about 75% set up for CNC) I'm building a small furnace for casting aluminum. I love working in aluminum and casting is really the ultimate method for creating useful stuff.
This is all for my interest in small ROV's (not robotics) but thats another story.
I have taught myself to program microcontrollers, ATMEL mainly but some PIC. I think I can call myself semi professional now.
Ham wise I am still a creator rather than a user. VK5ASY is a full call but I use it mainly for telemetry and video stuff. We have a very active use of Ham radio here, as I said most of the techs at work hold a call of some sort.
The off beat side is that I am studying karate, about nine years now .
I'm not far of my black belt (currently one step below, a high grade brown) This is a really good way of staying physically fit with a considerable amount of mental concentration needed as well. The brain is getting old and sluggish so I need to kick start it more often these days.

Good to read you two are keeping in touch. I really miss a good pint of English draft, it's all very cold weak larger stuff here. It's not all positive here in Aussie and yes we do have fly's lots of them but only when it's really hot in the suburbs , like now, out Bush it can be very bad at any time. Our main pest is the mosquitoes, they can carry nasty infectious stuff but not recently.
The wild life is really fascinating, we have lots of parrots, buggies and koalas. Roos and wallabies are not too common around here but not unheard of. We do have roadkill on the main road near us on a semi regular basis. Possums are very common and some exotic owls as well.

Sorry must go and get ready for work, It's 5:30 (am) and the temperature is 36 C (it was 28 over night).

Keep warm and have a pint for me.
I'd love to try Dave cousins stuff!

Best regards
