Directorate of Telecommunications MAINTENANCE UNITS; Weyhill Early Days By: Steven R Cole
Introduction During a clear out of my office at Weyhill in April 1991 prior to taking up a new appointment as IT Manager based at Horseferry House, I unearthed a collection of forty-seven black and white photographs going back to the creation of Weyhill Maintenance Unit. As to dates when these pictures were taken, I would guess at early 1970 for the first 24 and the remainder sometime during the latter half of the 70’s or maybe very early 80’s.
I would be grateful if you could contact me in the event that you are able to furnish details on all or some of the photographs in this gallery. In particular and where applicable, building location, persons names, dates, equipment (in this instance I refer to the custom Test Equipment which Weyhill was known to design and issue to the field) etc.
If nothing else, I hope these photographs bring back memories to those who worked at Weyhill of what the old place used to look like before the Directorate took it over. I believe the site had previously been used by the RAF as a H.F. Station with roots back to WWII.
Acknowledgements: I don’t have any definite information as to who took the photographs, or indeed who owns the copyright. It was thought they may have been taken by Terry Jeffery CWT who was the first Officer-in-Charge of the M.U. after it became operational in 1970. However, an e-mail from John Perry in October 2012 recalls some or possibly all photos being taken by Mike Homer WT who was also based at Weyhill M.U.d
