Introduction
This section outlines some of the history associated with the Directorate from its early origins up to cessation of trading in 1994.

Overview

Based on a document written by Ian Aitken, then Head of Field Service Operations, prepared in 1990 as part of the name change to DTELS, with added text by Steven R. Cole covering the period 1990-1994

Police on MF

A document written by Brian Pears describing the formation of the Directorate in the early 1940’s through the creation of nine regional Medium Wave broadcast sites in England and Wales.

Privatisation

Documents and commentary relating to the privatisation of the Directorate in 1994.

1955 Working Party Report

Assessment of the cost to the police forces in England and Wales of receiving procurement (equipment hire) and maintenance service from the Directorate of Telecommunication as opposed to a similar service from commercial companies.

1959 Review

A six page minute sent from Mr. W.H. Cornish to Sir Charles Cunningham (believed to have been the Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Home Office), seeking a decision regarding the continued existence of the Home Office Wireless Organisation, which had been under review for some years.

Home Office Circulars

Home Office circulars sent to Police Forces relating to wireless services provided by the Directorate during the period 1949-1968.
