Directorate of Telecommunications MISCELLANEOUS; RADIO AMATEURS By: Steven R Cole
Introduction By August 1980, around 10% of Directorate staff held a radio amateur licence, with some being more active then others.
In my case, I held the call sign G3ZDG for ten years and at the time was active on the HF and VHF bands. It was also a period when I spent a lot of my spare time constructing radio and data related equipment.
Like many of my colleagues, the hobby provided beneficial gains for the organisation by expanding one’s personal knowledge and honing practical skills.
Amateur Radio List and Credits One of the Directorate’s staff, Mike Watson, took the initiative in 1980 to compile a list of licence holders in the organisation and this is reproduced on this page. My thanks to Mike for sending in this lost gem.
Sadly, a number are now ‘silent keys’ but will be remembered for many reasons including their personalities, humour, technical prowess, enthusiasm and imparting knowledge to others.
Update 30 January 2021 A later list dated June 1984 has recently been found and sent in by Jack Diaper. The list opposite now reflects those radio amateurs who were employed by the Directorate at that time.
The list below details the names of people who were on the original 1980 list that had since left the organisation, or for some reason were missed off the list:
G3OAN - Ray Heath (SEO) G8ASP - Ian Gurton (SWT) G3HOC - Eddie Wilson (CWT) G4IIO - Phil Howe (WM) G3AEO - Dennis Price (WT) G3BNV - Fred Exeter (WT) G4INM - Tom Frankland (WT) G8NSB - Sid Bruce (WM) G4ATF - Paul French (WT) G8GJP - Godfrey Pankhurst (WT) G4JFZ - George Lacey (WT) G8ETU - Alan Metcalf (SWT) G8OTJ - Paul Corkrum (WT) G8POP - Roger Jimenez (WT) G8KNF - Duncan Hawkins (WM) G8IK - Vic Morse (SWE) GW8BLU - Vaughn Bowing (WT) G3BFQ - Ken Willmott (RWE) G8LJY - Alan Griffiths (WT) G8EJV - Eric Dunford (SWT) G3KDK - Bert Dean (CWT) G4LY - Bill Martin (WT)
